After Mr. Gresham was voted out of office this spring, the executive board of a major union has officially endorsed Zohran Mamdani for the upcoming election. Yvonne Armstrong, the newly elected president of the union, praised Mamdani for his commitment to frontline caregivers, emphasizing his plan to help them thrive in the city.
Armstrong stated, “Working people across New York City are uniting to defend our neighborhoods and our city from unprecedented attacks from extremist politicians and their billionaire donors who threaten healthcare, family unity, and our democratic values.” She expressed pride in endorsing Mamdani, highlighting his potential to collaborate with the union to secure essential services, develop affordable housing, and foster safe neighborhoods.
The election within the union, which boasts a budget exceeding $200 million and a membership of 450,000 on the East Coast, has been marked by calls for new leadership and serious allegations against Gresham. The fact that a considerable leader from one of New York’s significant, politically influential unions was unseated by a challenger is quite unprecedented.
Armstrong, in a recent interview, declared, “I’m leading with openness, urgency, and purpose,” indicating a forward-looking approach as the union charts its path ahead.
This endorsement comes at a time when political dynamics are shifting in New York, underscoring the importance of solid leadership in advocating for the needs of working-class citizens and ensuring their voices are heard amidst changing political landscapes.
