The International Association of Machinists (IAM), a union seeking to organize Delta Air Lines ground workers, has urged Delta and local authorities to conduct an investigation into a tire explosion at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport that resulted in the deaths of two Delta employees and left one injured.
IAM emphasized its dedication to the safety and well-being of its members and the community, offering support to those affected by the tragic incident. The union expressed its solidarity with Delta workers, calling for a swift and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the explosion.
Representing 100,000 airline workers across North America, the IAM is working to unionize Delta’s ramp workers, tower staff, and baggage handlers, while the Teamsters union is focusing on mechanics. Last month, IAM organizers held a small rally near the airport advocating for unionization.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and expressed his thoughts for the injured. He confirmed that police, fire, and airport officials were present at the scene.
John Laughter, Delta TechOps Chief of Operations, shared a memo with TechOps employees, expressing his sorrow over the incident involving three team members in a wheel and brake shop. He stated that two employees tragically lost their lives, while another was seriously injured. Laughter assured full support for the affected families and announced plans for an investigation to uncover the details of the accident.
A Delta spokesperson confirmed that the airline is cooperating with local authorities in a thorough investigation to understand the events leading up to the explosion.
