The East Side Union High School District in San Jose has reported a significant rise in its unhoused student population, now nearing 1,000 children. At Independence High School alone, 100 students have self-identified as unhoused, often seeking assistance from Maggie Rodriguez, the parent community specialist. Rodriguez finds it challenging to express her feelings about the situation, particularly as she can provide for her own children at home.
Many of these students, eager to learn, face immense struggles outside the classroom. Blasa Ozuna, a representative from the school district, emphasizes that the challenges these students encounter are unfathomable to most. It’s difficult for them to focus on their education when basic needs such as food and clothing are not met.
According to the latest numbers from the district, there are currently 950 unhoused students enrolled, a figure that increases by approximately 50 students each month. This count does not include those who may feel too ashamed or frightened to disclose their circumstances.
Despite their hardships, these students continue to attend school, motivated by the desire for education, meals, and support. Rodriguez challenges prevalent misconceptions about unhoused individuals, describing them as some of the most resilient people she has encountered.
To assist these students during the holiday season, the school district is organizing a fundraiser to create gift baskets, which will include $75 gift cards. Ozuna explains that these gift cards symbolize acknowledgment and care for the students, reinforcing the message that their struggles are seen and valued.
In the face of adversity, the resilience and determination of these students shine through, demonstrating a strong will to succeed despite daunting challenges. The community’s supportive actions, such as the fundraiser, are heartening and highlight a collective effort to uplift and recognize those in need. Such initiatives play a crucial role in creating a sense of belonging and support for these children, showcasing the empathetic spirit of the community.
