Thousands of music enthusiasts flocked to Grant Park on Thursday for the commencement of Chicago’s largest music festival, Lollapalooza.

Promoted as the 20th anniversary, this year’s four-day festival marked its Grant Park debut in 2005, although it shifted to a virtual format in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With top-billed artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Hozier, Midwest pop star Chappell Roan perhaps drew the most anticipation.

Fans adorned in bedazzled, bubblegum pink cowboy hats eagerly waited for Roan’s performance at the main stage, with some holding their spots for over five hours. Elsewhere, Roan supporters donned pink camo caps reading “Midwest Princess” and emulated her music video styles.

One notable difference this year was the number of sponsored pop-ups throughout the festival. Attendees could roller skate near Buckingham Fountain in a Coca-Cola promotion, decorate socks at the “GOLDTOE Sock Creation Station,” and sing at the “Jack Daniel’s Music & Karaoke Experience.”

Despite the promos, the music was the focal point, with artists like Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug and Tyla attracting animated crowds.

Early in the day, clouds threatened rain, but only a few drizzles fell before sunshine emerged, heating up the humid afternoon. Attendees sought shade and lined up at hydration stations.

Matt Hansen set the tone for the day, sharing his excitement and surprise at the large turnout for his early 1 p.m. set. Hansen has gained popularity on TikTok, with viral covers and original songs like “Let Em Go” and “Something To Remember.” His performance included a heartfelt cover of Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” and original compositions like “Lifejacket” and “Versions of Forever.”

BigXThaPlug, true to his Texas roots, energized the crowd with powerful raps and a dynamic stage presence. Despite some disruptions with fans throwing items on stage, his set maintained high energy. The Dallas rapper, known for tracks like “Mmhmm,” hinted at his upcoming performance in Chicago this November.

South African artist Tyla delivered a captivating performance, blending R&B, pop, and amapiano while accompanied by six dancers. Her set included tracks from her debut album and a rework of Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat.” Tyla’s performance coincided with a break in the clouds, further energizing the crowd.

Kesha’s set on Thursday began with the word “Freedom” displayed prominently. Her performance was a blend of heartfelt moments and campy fun, featuring elaborate costumes and a joyous celebration of her career’s evolution. Reflecting on her struggles and triumphs, Kesha connected deeply with her audience, who responded with enthusiasm. Songs like “Tik Tok,” “Cannibal,” and her latest single “JOYRIDE” highlighted her set.

Local artist Adan Diaz impressed on the BMI Stage, bringing youthful passion and energy despite technical difficulties. The Chicago native performed both released and unreleased songs, showcasing his bilingual lyrics and connecting with the crowd.

Labrinth delivered an impressive sets on the T-Mobile main stage amidst drizzle and potential weather threats. His multifaceted performance included live drums and lush harmonies, engaging the crowd with hits like “Still Don’t Know My Name” and collaborations from “Euphoria.”

Overall, the first day of Lollapalooza 2024 set an exciting tone for the festival, highlighting a mix of established stars and rising talents.
