Orlando, Fla. — Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood faced a challenging matchup in the Citrus Bowl against Texas, following a difficult performance against Ohio State. The Wolverines aimed to capitalize on Underwood’s skills, leading to a high-volume passing game. However, the results were a mixed bag in a 41-27 loss to the Longhorns.

Underwood, a freshman, recorded season highs with 23 completions on 42 attempts and showcased his running ability with 14 carries for 77 yards and a touchdown. Despite his impressive stats and physical presence at 6-foot-4 and 228 pounds, Underwood struggled with turnovers, finishing the game with two touchdown passes and three interceptions. Interim head coach Biff Poggi provided Underwood with more freedom on the field, a decision that proved both rewarding and risky.

Poggi acknowledged the potential of Underwood, stating, “He’s a wonderful kid with a huge upside. He’s a true freshman starting in an elite conference and playing in a bowl game against an SEC football team that was preseason ranked No. 1.” Despite the setbacks, Poggi emphasized that the experience would serve as a valuable learning opportunity for Underwood.

The critical moments for Underwood came late in the game. Late in the third quarter, with Michigan positioned well, Underwood attempted a deep pass that resulted in an interception. Then, in the fourth quarter, after Texas regained the lead, Underwood’s third down pass was intercepted, leading to a crucial touchdown for Texas that sealed the game. Poggi remarked, “He’ll learn… these are only learning things for him.”

Underwood’s recent struggles highlight a trend; he has accounted for eight turnovers over the last five games, compared to only three in the first half of the season. Poggi acknowledged that his player might feel disheartened but urged him to refocus and continue working hard.

On the opposing side, Texas quarterback Arch Manning showcased his experience, completing 21 of 34 passes for 221 yards, along with two rushing touchdowns. Despite facing receiver drops, Manning’s performance underscored the challenges facing Underwood in his first season.

New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is now tasked with nurturing Underwood’s growth. The coaching staff’s development plans will be crucial in helping players like Underwood refine their skills. Whittingham’s focus on the young quarterback was highlighted upon his arrival in Orlando while observing Underwood’s progression.

Win or lose, advocates for Underwood remain optimistic about his future, given his strong arm and natural athleticism. Even Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged the difficulty of performing at a high level as a true freshman in the Big Ten, noting that such experiences are pivotal for Underwood’s development as a quarterback.

There is hope for Underwood’s career trajectory, and with continued mentorship and commitment, the Michigan quarterback has the potential to evolve into a prominent player in college football moving forward.
