Fans of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” your wish has come true, but the results may disappoint. Wendy’s, the fast-food chain based in Columbus, is teaming up with Paramount to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beloved animated series by introducing the Krabby Patty Kollab.
Launching on Tuesday, October 8, the Krabby Patty Kollab features two new menu items: the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty, which consists of a vanilla Frosty blended with a pineapple mango flavored puree, and the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger, made with a quarter pound beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and a “top-secret Krabby Kollab sauce” served on a toasted bun.
A team from The Enquirer sampled both items to gauge whether the Krabby Patty Kollab would be deemed worthy by the residents of Bikini Bottom. Unfortunately, the general opinion among the group—Haadiza Ogwude, David Wysong, Jolene Almendarez, and myself—was that while the burger was decent, it did not embody the spirit of the legendary Krabby Patty.
The much-touted Krabby Kollab sauce left something to be desired, as it was considered thin and lacking in flavor, which resulted in a burger that, while tasty, was described by Jolene as “very wet.” Haadiza remarked that it gave off Chum Bucket vibes, while David suggested it may not get SpongeBob’s approval, but would certainly please Mr. Krabs given the potential financial boost for Wendy’s.
I was the lone voice in favor of the collaboration, but my colleagues noted that my limited knowledge of “SpongeBob SquarePants” might affect my judgment, especially as they represent the millennial view while I come from Gen Z.
The Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty also fell short of expectations, missing the bright yellow color one would typically associate with a SpongeBob-themed dessert. Although it did have an orange puree swirl, the dessert mostly melted into a simple cup of vanilla ice cream within 30 minutes—a factor possibly influenced by our delay in taste-testing.
