Underwater Cable Sparks Light for Mali Island’s Three Villages

A long-cherished dream is finally coming to fruition for the residents of Mali Island, as the installation of an underwater electrical cable from the mainland in Labasa is set to provide electricity to the island’s three villages. Mali district representative Pita Baleibau expressed the profound impact that the lack of electricity has had on the community for many years, particularly in regards to education, business, healthcare, and the overall quality of life.

“For many years, the people of our district lived without access to electricity, which greatly affected education, business, healthcare, and general living conditions,” said Baleibau. The much-anticipated erection of electric poles has filled the villagers with joy, leading to celebrations marked by tears of happiness as they witness their long-awaited dream becoming a reality.

This development signifies a turning point for the community, as electricity will now allow children to study at night, enable small businesses to operate more efficiently, and improve the services provided by health centers. Baleibau noted that the once-darkened community is now filled with gratitude, as the promise of light symbolizes renewed faith in government support.

This electrification initiative aligns with broader efforts undertaken by Fijian authorities to enhance infrastructure and provide electricity to underserved areas. Similar projects are progressing in other communities like Masaranikai and Valelawa, where residents have been advocating for electricity for many years but have faced various barriers. The government has shown commitment to rural electrification by announcing various projects aimed at improving access to essential services, ultimately aiming for better living conditions and greater opportunities for remote communities.

As Mali Island prepares to embrace the benefits of electricity, there is palpable hope that this advancement will not only illuminate homes but will also foster educational growth and economic empowerment, paving the way for a brighter future for all communities involved.
