Undefeated Luke Riley Makes UFC Debut in Qatar with Pimblett’s Backing

Luke Riley, one of the most promising prospects in mixed martial arts (MMA), is set to make his highly anticipated UFC debut this weekend in Qatar, where he hopes to translate the confidence instilled in him by fellow fighter Paddy Pimblett into a knockout performance. Known as ‘the striking version of’ Pimblett, the undefeated featherweight is excited to showcase his talent on a card headlined by a lightweight title eliminator between Arman Tsarukyan and Dan Hooker.

At just 26 years old, Riley boasts an impressive record of 11-0 in professional MMA, including eight wins by knockout. He has built his career in the Cage Warriors promotion, training alongside the UFC star Pimblett at Next Generation MMA in Liverpool. His journey to the UFC was slightly delayed earlier this year due to visa issues that kept him from competing in Dana White’s Contender Series, where he was expected to fight for a UFC contract.

In an interview reflecting on his journey, Riley recounted a pivotal conversation he had with Pimblett just before receiving the call for his UFC contract. “Paddy reassured me that I’d reach the UFC and told me I was going to do well,” Riley shared, emphasizing the bond he has with the fellow fighter. The very next day, after a series of missed calls from his manager Graham Boylan, Riley learned not only of the challenges he faced but also a silver lining: he was officially joining the UFC.

Riley expressed frustration at missing out on the Contender Series but was soon buoyed by the revelation that he was “in the big leagues now,” thanks to Boylan’s joke to lighten the mood. His self-belief has soared, emboldened by the support of Pimblett, whom he refers to as “loyal to the bone.”

As he prepares to face Bogdan Grad in his debut bout, Riley remains steadfast in his conviction about competing at the highest level, even against renowned fighters in the division, such as current champion Alexander Volkanovski. “There is no doubt in my mind, whoever’s put in the cage with me on my best night, I can beat,” he asserted confidently.

Riley’s upcoming fight on November 22 promises to be a significant milestone in his career, with UFC Fight Night broadcasts available on UFC Fight Pass starting at 3 PM UK time. Alongside him debuts another Liverpudlian, Shem Rock, who also brings fresh talent to the octagon. With the backing of his mentor Pimblett and his undefeated record, Riley’s debut could be a pivotal moment in his path to becoming a UFC champion. The energy surrounding his introduction to the UFC hints at a promising future for this rising star.
