At the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Greensboro, North Carolina, Miles Higgins and Jordyn Robbins both secured gold medals in the javelin throw, while Bryson Robinson triumphed in the long jump amidst challenging weather conditions, including multiple lightning delays. The first day of competition took place at the Marcus T. Johnson Track on the North Carolina A&T campus.
After five events, the UNCW men’s team is in third place with 28 points, while the women’s team stands in seventh with 12 points. Head coach Jeff Klaves praised his team’s performance, highlighting their commitment and competitive spirit.
Higgins, a junior, earned his first CAA Javelin Throw Championship title with a throw of 63.73 meters (209-1) on his initial attempt. This victory earned the Seahawks a crucial 10 team points and qualified Higgins for the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville, Florida, taking place on May 28.
Robbins, also a junior, defended her javelin title with a throw of 42.73 meters (140-2), showcasing her resilience by narrowly beating Delaware’s Morgan Reiner. Robbins is on track to become a two-time NCAA qualifier as she awaits results that will determine her qualification status for the NCAA East First Round.
Robinson, in a neck-and-neck long jump competition, once again claimed the championship with a jump of 7.53 meters (24-8 1/2) on his final attempt, solidifying his place in the NCAA East First Round alongside his teammate Ivan Poag, who won silver with a personal best of 7.16 meters (23-6).
In addition to the gold medal performances, the Seahawks saw significant achievements across other events. Senior sprinter Nasiah Ferguson broke her own school record in the women’s 400 prelims with a time of 55 seconds, while freshman Ella Jane Osada also advanced to the finals with a personal best of 55.93 seconds.
Cameron Wright and Kai Williams showcased their speed in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, both qualifying for the finals with impressive times. Wright’s performance also moved him into the top echelon of the program’s all-time list.
Overall, the Seahawks had a remarkable day on the track, with eight athletes qualifying for finals across six different events. The team is looking forward to continuing the momentum into the next day of competition, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
