The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s soccer team put up a strong fight but fell to No. 22 Colorado, losing 1-0 in their home opener on Thursday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The deciding goal came in the 71st minute.
During the first half, UNCG maintained possession for the most part, while Colorado began to find their rhythm. Despite Colorado outshooting UNCG 4-2, neither team managed to register a shot on goal in that half. The pace picked up significantly in the second half, with Colorado taking the first shot on goal just four minutes in. UNCG’s goalkeeper made a crucial kick save to keep the game scoreless.
In the 66th minute, UNCG came close when a shot from outside the 18-yard box was saved by Colorado’s goalkeeper, marking the Spartans’ best opportunity. However, the breakthrough for Colorado came shortly after when a foul drew a free kick taken by their goalkeeper Jordan Nytes from just inside midfield. Shyra James then headed the ball into the back right post for the game-winning goal at 71:35.
As a result, UNCG’s record stands at 0-2-1, while Colorado improves to 4-1-0.
UNCG will host in-state rival Charlotte on Sunday, September 1, with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Admission for regular home games is free, and this match is part of UNCG’s Rawkin’ Welcome Week. The first 50 NC Fusion kids wearing their jerseys will receive a complimentary mini soccer ball.
