Members of the Australian and New Zealand Netball Women’s Team paid tribute to the late Unaisi Rokoura, former Fiji Netball captain and coach, by donning black armbands during their second Constellation Cup match last Friday. This heartfelt gesture was in remembrance of Rokoura, who tragically lost her life after being swept away by strong currents while foraging for freshwater mussels in the Rewa River.
Following an extensive search operation, her body was recovered three days later close to the Waila dredging plant. Unaisi Rokoura, fondly known as Una, left an indelible mark on the world of sports, particularly netball, where she commenced her journey with the Fiji Pearls at just 17 years old. Throughout her career, she represented Fiji in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, assuming the role of captain from 1997 to 2006.
Rokoura’s athletic prowess was not confined to netball alone; she excelled in various sports including hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball. Beyond her playing days, she dedicated herself to coaching and mentored the Fiji Pearls from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 until her passing in 2024.
The news of her passing struck a deep chord within the netball community, prompting many to reflect on her influence as an athlete and coach. Fiji Netball expressed its sorrow, recognizing her not only as an exceptional player but as a cherished friend and mentor to numerous aspiring athletes. In response to this tragic incident, community leaders are advocating for increased awareness and improvements in water safety, highlighting the essential need for caution during outdoor activities.
Rokoura’s legacy as a dedicated athlete, coach, and mentor will undoubtedly continue to inspire those she touched. While her loss is profoundly felt, there is hope that her spirit will lead to increased emphasis on safety in aquatic settings, ensuring her memory is honored while protecting future generations. Her commitment to sports and her passion for empowering others serve as a lasting inspiration as the community unites to celebrate the life of this remarkable individual.
