Unaisi Rokoura: Fiji Netball Legend Remembered for Trailblazing Career

Former Fiji Pearls captain and head coach Unaisi Rokoura was laid to rest this morning at Lovonilase Cemetery in Suva, an event that brought together family, friends, and former national representatives across various sporting bodies to honor her life and contributions to Fijian netball. The service commenced at the Nabua Methodist Church, where attendees expressed their condolences and celebrated Rokoura’s legacy.

Rokoura’s passing has been described as a tremendous loss to the sport by Netball Fiji President Ruby-Ann Sorovaki, who reflected on her indelible impact on netball development in Fiji. “While we are saddened by her passing, we are grateful to someone who has dedicated years of her life to the development of netball in Fiji. Thank you for all that you’ve done Una; you will be missed,” Sorovaki stated.

Rokoura’s journey in sports began at the young age of 17, during which she excelled in netball, hockey, rugby, basketball, and beach volleyball. Her notable career includes representing Fiji in six Pacific Games and two Commonwealth Games, along with two Netball World Championships. She captained the Fiji Pearls from 1997 to 2006, a highlight of her extensive portfolio. Transitioning into coaching, she led the Fiji Pearls as head coach from 2009 to 2013 and again from 2022 to 2024, demonstrating her enduring commitment to the sport.

The netball community’s grief intensified after her tragic passing, which occurred due to drowning while she was gathering freshwater mussels near Navuso, Fiji. The black armbands worn by teams from Australia and New Zealand during recent matches serve as a testament to the high regard in which Rokoura was held within the global netball community.

Her influence extended beyond national borders, as she also coached the Papua New Guinea Pepes, and she worked tirelessly to elevate the standard of netball in Fiji. Her mentorship inspired many athletes and coaches, fostering an environment of growth and excellence. Sorovaki emphasized that Rokoura’s legacy will continue through the lives of all the players she has touched.

As Fiji and the broader sporting community mourn her loss, they unite in celebrating a life dedicated to sports and community. The spirit and dedication of Unaisi Rokoura will remain a guiding light for many, underscoring the importance of mentorship and the enduring power of sports in bringing people together.
