The United Nations (UN) Office in Suva held a notable reception on August 26, 2024, celebrating 80 years of the UN’s efforts in promoting peace, human rights, social progress, and sustainable development globally. This event gathered government officials, diplomats, and representatives from international and civil society organizations, all reflecting on the UN’s longstanding partnership with Pacific nations.
Among the prominent attendees were Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Non-Resident Ambassador to Israel, Filipo Tarakinikini, along with Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, and members of the Diplomatic Corps. During the event, speakers emphasized the integral role of Fiji in fostering regional cooperation and the nation’s substantial commitment to multilateralism. They highlighted the necessity of a strong UN presence in the Pacific to effectively tackle the region’s unique development challenges and climate issues.

The reception followed significant discussions earlier in the week, where Prime Minister Rabuka had a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. During their conversation, Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s dedication to the principles of the UN Charter, which the country has upheld since its membership commenced in 1970. The Prime Minister acknowledged Fiji’s essential role in the international domain, emphasizing its contributions towards peace and climate action.
