Three Ukrainian tennis stars—Elina Svitolina, Yulia Starodubtseva, and Dayana Yastremska—successfully advanced past the first round of Wimbledon 2025 and are gearing up for their second-round matches against “neutral” opponents. Notably, Yastremska achieved a remarkable victory over world No. 2 Coco Gauff, marking a significant milestone in her career. However, compatriot Marta Kostyuk’s journey ended prematurely when she was defeated by Slovenian qualifier Veronika Erjavec.
The second-round matches will take place from July 2-3. Elina Svitolina, currently ranked 14th, is set to compete against Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who has won their previous encounters, including a match at the 2023 WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. Svitolina will seek to turn the tide in their fourth meeting.
Yulia Starodubtseva will face world No. 19 Lyudmyla Samsonova, who won in straight sets against Maia Jaušovec in the first round. The two players have only clashed once before, where Starodubtseva emerged victorious.
Dayana Yastremska will go up against Anastasia Zakharova, who pulled off an upset by defeating former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in her opening match. This encounter marks the first time the two players will meet on the court.
In addition to their singles competition, five Ukrainian players, including Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremska, will also participate in the doubles events at Wimbledon.
Both Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk have achieved significant accolades in their careers, with Svitolina known for her bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and multiple WTA titles, while Kostyuk has made strides since her debut in 2016, recently becoming a WTA tournament champion.
The Ukrainian tennis contingent at this year’s Wimbledon showcases the resilience and talent of the athletes, emphasizing a hopeful outlook for their upcoming matches. As they face tough opponents, their performances will undoubtedly attract support from fans and fellow players alike.
