The University of Georgia has disclosed the terms of a settlement regarding a civil lawsuit filed by former football recruiting staffer Victory “Tory” Bowles. This lawsuit stemmed from a tragic incident on January 15, 2023, where a crash resulted in the deaths of two individuals connected to the football program.

In the settlement, Bowles has been awarded $1.5 million, which will be paid by insurers representing the UGA Athletic Association. The confidential settlement agreement dated August 19 was made public following an open records request by the Athens Banner-Herald.

During the fatal incident, Bowles was a backseat passenger in an SUV rented by UGA, driven by recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. LeCroy and offensive lineman Devin Willock lost their lives in the crash, which occurred while LeCroy was reportedly racing with defensive tackle Jalen Carter after a national championship celebration. Law enforcement stated that LeCroy’s blood alcohol level was significantly over the legal limit, and both vehicles involved were traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The lawsuit accused the University of Georgia of negligence for allowing LeCroy to operate the vehicle, despite her history of driving offenses. UGA maintained that LeCroy was not authorized to drive the SUV that evening due to her intoxication.

In addition to the settlement with UGA, Bowles is pursuing a separate lawsuit against Carter, seeking at least $5 million. She claims that Carter failed to provide assistance following the accident. Bowles has suffered serious injuries from the crash, with approximately 20 fractures, including spinal injuries, a rare pain disorder, and damage to her organs. Medical expenses reported in October exceeded $171,595, along with a claim of lost income exceeding $17,800, which has left her unable to work. It is important to note that UGA terminated Bowles’ position in 2023 while she was on unpaid leave.

The settlement agreement emphasizes that both parties decided to resolve the matter to avoid protracted litigation, without any admission of fault.

This conclusion to the legal matter highlights the importance of accountability and the potential for healing in the aftermath of tragedy. By reaching a settlement, both parties can focus on moving forward, and it may serve as a reminder of the critical responsibility that comes with driving and the consequences of reckless behavior.
