UFL Dissolves Brahmas, Eyes Smaller Venues and a 2028 Expansion

The United Football League has officially announced the dissolution of the San Antonio Brahmas, along with the Michigan Panthers and the Memphis Showboats. This decision, which the league made public on Friday, comes amid a strategic shift towards smaller venues to enhance the fan experience. The league’s statement emphasized that the large capacity of stadiums such as the Alamodome, which can accommodate over 62,000 spectators for football events, does not align with its new vision.

Despite having the third-best attendance figures in the league during the 2025 season, the San Antonio Brahmas faced significant challenges. The team had a promising start under head coach Wade Phillips in 2024, achieving a commendable 7-3 record and competing in the inaugural UFL Championship Game. However, the 2025 season took a turn for the worse, with Phillips taking a leave of absence after three losses. Interim head coach Payton Pardee could not steer the team out of its slump, resulting in a disappointing 1-9 finish for the season.

An Alamodome spokesperson expressed disappointment over the discontinuation of the Brahmas franchise but acknowledged the reasoning behind the league’s move towards smaller, more cost-effective venues. The spokesperson indicated a commitment to leveraging the opportunity to host more major concerts and sporting events in the future while remaining hopeful for the return of quality spring football to the stadium.

Looking ahead, the United Football League hinted at potential expansion plans for 2028, although specific details regarding these plans have not yet been disclosed. The dissolution of the Brahmas marks a significant change in the landscape of spring football, and while it may signal the end of one chapter, the possibility of rebuilding and expansion in the future remains a positive prospect.
