The UCLA gymnastics team, currently ranked ninth, has set a high standard for performance as they kick off their season. With two meets completed, the Bruins understand that executing their routines flawlessly is essential to avoid deductions from the judges. Head coach Janelle McDonald emphasized the importance of learning and growing from their experiences to become their best selves.
As they approach their home opener against Nebraska at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, McDonald noted that the team is concentrating on the finer details of their routines and landings. The Bruins faced tough competition at a recent quad meet in Utah, where they placed third behind defending national champions Oklahoma and No. 2 Louisiana State. This early challenge is seen as a prime opportunity to gauge their progress and areas for improvement.
McDonald expressed that the team is still in the process of refining their skills, stating, “None of us are locked in how we want to be. It’s a really good test early in the season.”
Senior star Jordan Chiles shared her belief that if the team can reach their full potential, they could contend for a national title. She remarked on the remarkable talent they showcase during practices and how the unique personalities of each gymnast create a magical environment in the gym. “We’re going to keep pushing and keep pushing,” Chiles affirmed.
The coaching staff is particularly focused on developing the team’s freshmen, encouraging them to gain valuable experience. McDonald noted significant improvements in the athletes’ ability to manage nerves and support one another as they’ve progressed through their early meets.
Chiles, who recently earned her second consecutive Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors with an impressive all-around score of 39.575 in Utah, remains dedicated to the team’s success, despite her busy offseason where she finished third on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” Chiles is fueled by last season’s second-place finish and is determined to showcase the Bruins’ talents in the upcoming competitions, stating, “It’s just a matter of time when that spark is going to finally ignite and people are gonna be very shocked.”
With a commitment to growth and a focus on teamwork, UCLA gymnastics is poised for an exciting season ahead.
