Orlando Johnson’s “Legend of the Dome” celebration transformed into a triumphant resurgence for the UC Santa Barbara men’s basketball team, who snapped a three-game losing streak with a 70-59 victory over UC Riverside.
After being haunted by opponent put-backs in two overtime losses the previous week, the Gauchos prioritized rebounding in their latest game. Head coach Joe Pasternack emphasized the importance of collective effort, stating, “All five have to block out and rebound, every single possession.” The team succeeded in this effort, out-rebounding the Highlanders 39-29 while limiting them to just five offensive rebounds.
With this victory, UCSB improved their record to 18-11 and secured sole possession of fourth place in the Big West Conference, just half a game behind third-place Cal State Northridge. Senior transfer Aidan Mahaney played a pivotal role in the outcome, scoring 21 points, eight of which came during the crucial final minutes. “You’re 30 seconds of live, game-time play from first place in the league,” he reflected, highlighting the importance of teamwork. “We did a good job of rallying around each other.”
Sophomore forward Zion Sensley also contributed significantly, demonstrating his shooting prowess with three three-pointers and securing a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. “I want to make sure I emphasized rebounding today,” he noted, showcasing the team’s determination to improve their performance.
Despite the victory, the Gauchos faced challenges during the second half, struggling offensively. They missed 12 of their first 15 shots and committed six turnovers early in the half. Nonetheless, the halftime celebration of Johnson’s impact, a three-time All-American and former Big West Player of the Year, filled the arena with excitement and pride.
The Gauchos managed to regain control late in the game, with Mahaney leading an 18-9 scoring run to close out the match. The team showcased their resilience as they fought off a late rally from Riverside. “Defense and rebounding is our only chance,” Pasternack stated, owing their success largely to their defensive efforts despite their lower shooting percentages.
Moving forward, UCSB will take on UC Irvine on Saturday, aiming to continue their positive momentum. The Gauchos are hopeful for the return of starting point guard Miro Little, who has missed much of the season due to injuries. “We’re really excited about that,” Pasternack said of Little’s potential return, indicating a renewed energy for the upcoming game.
With their sights set on the NCAA Tournament, the Gauchos are determined to sustain their defensive strategy and enhanced rebounding efforts as they navigate the remainder of the season.
