UC Merced stands as a significant force for academic excellence and economic advancement in the San Joaquin Valley, contributing an impressive $1.12 billion annually to the region’s economy, according to a recent independent analysis by Beacon Economics commissioned by the university. This economic impact is notably concentrated in Merced County, where the university serves as a crucial job creator, supporting one in every 15 jobs.

The analysis reveals that UC Merced generates over $1.02 billion in economic output each year within Merced County alone. This contribution translates into approximately 7,332 jobs and $465.8 million in labor income, highlighting the university’s pivotal role in the local economy.

The university’s reach extends beyond the borders of Merced County, with its operations indirectly creating an additional 871 jobs statewide and generating $77.8 million in labor income and $246.3 million in economic output. Overall, the statewide impact of UC Merced is estimated to be around $1.36 billion.

Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz emphasized the university’s commitment to the region, stating, “The Valley is our home. UC Merced, as this report confirms, is a powerful driver of economic vitality, population growth, and individual prosperity for Merced County, the Valley and the state, in addition to delivering the highest standard of student success and globally recognized research.”

The insights from Beacon Economics were derived from an in-depth analysis of state, regional, and university data from the 2023-24 fiscal year, with figures adjusted to 2025 dollars. The study meticulously examined the direct impacts of UC Merced’s operations, research activities, student spending, and capital investments, as well as the indirect effects on material suppliers and service providers.

The report underscores the significant role of UC Merced not only in fostering educational success but also in stimulating local economies, making it an essential asset to the San Joaquin Valley and California at large.
