Ubisoft is actively collaborating with Nintendo to enhance Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for the upcoming Switch 2 console. The gaming giant has confirmed that this feature will be integrated directly into its proprietary Anvil engine, streamlining the development process for future titles.
This development means that Ubisoft games can leverage improved VRR capabilities without the need for a custom build each time a new game is launched. The integration is poised to deliver smoother gameplay experiences on the Switch 2, particularly for upcoming titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Star Wars Outlaws, which are utilizing this enhanced VRR functionality.
In a recent interview, Ubisoft detailed the technical approach to achieving VRR support, even at frame rates below 40Hz. Currently, the Switch 2’s VRR only activates above this threshold, prompting the Ubisoft team to employ innovative techniques to ensure performance. For instance, to maintain a target frame rate of 30fps while still benefiting from VRR, the same frame is presented twice in a single refresh cycle. This allows the hardware to effectively transmit 60Hz data, resulting in smoother visuals while avoiding noticeable stutters.
The significance of this advancement extends beyond just one game. By incorporating VRR support into the Anvil engine, Ubisoft aims to facilitate a more efficient development process across its titles. This means that upcoming releases, including the anticipated Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag Resynced, can seamlessly incorporate this VRR support with minimal additional effort required for each project.
As Ubisoft continues to enhance gaming experiences for the Switch 2, the integration of VRR technology represents a progressive step towards delivering smoother gameplay and improved frame rate targets. This collaboration with Nintendo not only highlights the company’s commitment to innovation but also promises a brighter future for gaming on the new console.
