The Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF) has declared via social media that workers from Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) are set to initiate strike action starting February 15, intensifying an existing industrial dispute with the power utility company. This announcement follows EFL’s recent statement expressing hope for a resolution through further dialogue.

EFL’s chief executive, Fatiaki Gibson, expressed optimism that “good sense will prevail” during this challenging period and appealed for cooperation from CETWUF members and their leadership team. Despite these efforts, the dispute escalated after CETWUF opted not to continue with a voluntary mediation process, which was part of collective bargaining meetings facilitated by the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

On February 7, CETWUF informed the ministry in writing of its decision, emphasizing a preference for resolving the matter through Arbitration Court proceedings instead, which are set for March 23. The impending strike underscores the tensions between the union and EFL, highlighting the broader challenges faced by workers in pursuing fair bargaining practices.

As discussions and interventions continue, there remains a glimmer of hope that the situation could still reach a peaceful resolution before the strike takes effect. This scenario not only reflects the current labor climate in Fiji but also signifies the ongoing need for constructive dialogue in addressing worker grievances and fostering positive employment relations.
