U.S. Soccer Stumbles Again: Draw Leaves Fans Disappointed

The U.S. men’s national soccer team came close to ending their winless streak on Tuesday night, but a late twist allowed New Zealand to secure a 1-1 draw at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. Christian Pulisic scored for the U.S. in the second half, but Mark McKenzie’s attempted clearance in the 89th minute deflected off New Zealand’s Ben Waine, denying the Americans a victory.

This match concluded a disappointing international window for the U.S. team, which coincided with the official announcement of Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach.

New Zealand created early chances, but the U.S. thought they had taken the lead in the 21st minute when Ricardo Pepi found the net. That goal was disallowed due to an offside in the buildup. Matt Turner made key saves in the first half, including stops against Liberato Cacace and a long-range effort from Yunus Musah. He continued his strong performance by denying Elijah Just at close range.

The U.S. increased their pressure after halftime, with Brenden Aaronson making an effort inside the box, but his left-footed shot was turned away by New Zealand’s Max Crocrombe. The breakthrough finally came in the 68th minute with a well-executed team play. Following a series of passes, Pulisic received a layoff from Folarin Balogun and scored, bringing his international goal tally to 31, just one behind Eric Wynalda in the U.S. all-time rankings.

Despite the U.S. attempting to extend their lead, a late defensive mishap allowed New Zealand to equalize. McKenzie’s clearance deflected off Waine, resulting in a goal that ended the match in a draw. The outcome drew boos from the home crowd as the U.S. was unable to secure a win in front of their supporters. Notable performers for the U.S. included Fossey, Aaronson, and Aidan Morris.

Next, the U.S. men’s national team will face Panama on October 12 in Austin, Texas, followed by a crucial match against rivals Mexico three days later.
