In a powerful demonstration of the United States’ military capabilities, over 50 aircraft and two Patriot missile batteries participated in an “elephant walk” at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa on May 6, 2025. This operation, which showcases the integrated air and missile defense strategies of the U.S. military, involved an impressive array of 53 aircraft from the Air Force and Navy, alongside two Army MIM-104 Patriot systems.

Brig Gen. Nicholas Evans, the commander of the 18th Wing, emphasized the importance of this exercise for showcasing America’s commitment to joint operations and its readiness to project airpower across the Indo-Pacific region. He stated, “Working alongside our allies and partners, Kadena stands ready to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

The participating aircraft included a diverse range of top-tier models, such as twenty-four F-35A Lightning IIs, eight F-15E Strike Eagles, six HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopters, and others, alongside support from drones and reconnaissance planes. The event, part of a week-long operational readiness training, involved various drills and simulations designed to assess the readiness of the base in collaboration with Japan’s defense forces.

Chief Master Sgt. Brandon Wolfgang, the wing’s senior enlisted leader, noted that such displays send a clear message, showcasing unity and capability to both allies and adversaries alike. The event follows the recent arrival of new aircraft squadrons to maintain operational coverage, including the introduction of F-35As from Alaska and Utah, alongside plans for the permanent stationing of F-15EX Eagle IIs starting in 2026.

This significant military exercise not only highlights the U.S. military’s preparedness but also reinforces its commitment to regional security in collaboration with allied forces. The ongoing support for advanced aircraft and defense technologies promises to enhance the operational readiness of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific theater, ensuring they can respond effectively to any potential threats.

Overall, these efforts illustrate a proactive stance in maintaining security and stability in a strategically important region.
