A U.S. envoy reiterated Washington’s commitment to supporting Syria’s new government, emphasizing there is “no Plan B” for efforts to unite a nation grappling with the aftermath of civil war and ongoing sectarian strife. Tom Barrack, who serves as the U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, made these remarks during an exclusive interview with The Associated Press in Beirut.

Barrack also expressed his concerns over Israel’s recent interventions in Syria, describing them as ill-timed and detrimental to the stabilization efforts in the region. His comments come after significant violence erupted in Syria’s southern province of Sweida, where clashes occurred between the Druze religious minority and Sunni Muslim Bedouin tribes, resulting in hundreds of casualties.

Syrian government forces had initially stepped in, claiming to restore order but reportedly sided with the Bedouins before agreeing to a ceasefire with Druze factions. There have been alarming reports of government forces allegedly killing Druze civilians and engaging in destruction.

Israel’s involvement has been notable, as it conducted airstrikes aimed at the Syrian government forces to protect the Druze, a community that is often viewed as aligned with Israel. Recent military actions included strikes against convoys and key Syrian defense sites in Damascus.

Over the weekend, Barrack played a role in announcing a ceasefire between Syria and Israel aimed at stopping the escalating violence. Following this, Syrian forces have redeployed in Sweida to prevent further clashes, and plans were made for the evacuation of civilians affected by the conflict.

This complex situation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region and the challenges faced in seeking peace and stability. Despite the tumultuous backdrop, the recent ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for de-escalation and dialogue in a deeply divided country.
