Tyler, the Creator has released his new album, Chromakopia, which serves as the follow-up to his self-produced album, Call Me If You Get Lost. The album includes collaborations with Childish Gambino, Schoolboy Q, Teezo Touchdown, Daniel Caesar, Doechii, and features Lil Wayne, Glorilla, and Sexyy Red on the track “Sticky.” However, guest artists are not credited on streaming platforms at this time.
Chromakopia features several samples, including music from Zambian musician Paul Ngozi on “Noid,” Q-Tip and James Brown on “Darlin, I,” and People’s Pleasure with Alive and Well on “Take Your Mask Off.” Daniel Caesar is acknowledged as a co-composer for two tracks, “St. Chroma” and “Tomorrow.”
Leading up to the album’s release, Tyler teased it with a series of self-directed videos, including “St. Chroma,” “Noid,” featuring Ayo Edebiri, and “Thought I Was Dead.” He explained the unconventional release timing on social media, writing, “YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT WHEN YOU WAKE UP, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SLEEP FOR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU WAKE UP.”
During an album listening event in Los Angeles, Tyler connected the themes of Chromakopia to wisdom he has gained from his mother. He reflected, “Now that I’m 33, all that stuff is like ‘oh that’s what the fuck she was talking about,’” acknowledging changes in his life as he has aged. Tyler concluded by expressing a desire to write about the experiences and thoughts he reflects on while spending time alone.
He plans to tour next year to support the album, with performances scheduled across three continents.
