Tyler, the Creator has released his new album, Chromakopia. The self-produced follow-up to Call Me If You Get Lost features contributions from artists such as Childish Gambino, Schoolboy Q, Teezo Touchdown, Daniel Caesar, Doechii, and additional appearances from Lil Wayne, Glorilla, and Sexyy Red on the track “Sticky.” However, guest artists are not listed on streaming platforms at present.
The album incorporates several samples, including work from Zambian musician Paul Ngozi on “Noid,” Q-Tip and James Brown on “Darlin, I,” People’s Pleasure With Alive and Well on “Take Your Mask Off,” and Luke on “Balloon.” Daniel Caesar also served as a co-composer on the tracks “St. Chroma” and “Tomorrow.”
Leading up to the release of Chromakopia, Tyler shared a series of noir-inspired videos for tracks like “St. Chroma,” “Noid,” featuring Ayo Edebiri, and “Thought I Was Dead.” In a social media post, he explained the decision to launch the album at an unconventional time, stating, “YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT WHEN YOU WAKE UP, YOU DONT HAVE TO DEPRIVE YOURSELF OF SLEEP FOR SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE THERE WHEN YOU WAKE UP.”
During a listening event in Los Angeles, Tyler connected the album’s themes to lessons learned from his mother. “Now that I’m 33, all that stuff is like ‘oh that’s what the fuck she was talking about,’” he reflected. “‘Oh, I’m not the guy I was at 20. Oh shit, people are getting older, folks having kids and families.’ All I’ve got is a new Ferrari, that does feel kind of weird. I’ve got a grey hair on my chest. Life is life. I just wanted to write about stuff I think about when I’m dolo’ing.”
Tyler plans to support the album with a world tour next year, visiting three continents.
