Tyler Locklear: The Mariners’ Future Star or Trade Bait?

Tyler Locklear has emerged as a significant prospect for the Seattle Mariners since his selection in the second round of the 2022 draft from Virginia Commonwealth University. While his brief stint with the big league club last year yielded disappointing results, his current performance suggests that 2025 could be a breakout year.

The Mariners have struggled to find a full-time first baseman and have made efforts to bolster their roster. The arrival of new players from the Arizona Diamondbacks adds depth to the team but may cast uncertainty around Locklear’s future with the organization.

Despite the changes, Locklear has consistently elevated his game. His recent statistics reflect a powerful comeback, showcasing a 137 wRC+ with 18 home runs and 80 RBIs over 94 games. He has notably improved his contact rate, evidenced by a .225 ISO, the highest since his time in Double-A.

Locklear’s current hot streak includes impressive feats, such as driving in runs in nine consecutive at-bats, hitting home runs in three consecutive games, and reaching base safely in his last 11 plate appearances. His batting average has climbed to an outstanding .323 with an on-base percentage of .406 and a slugging percentage of .551.

One key adjustment has been lowering his hands during his batting stance, which has helped him make better contact against fast pitches. This technique seems to have revitalized his power-hitting abilities, as illustrated by his hard-hit rate of 43.8%, a career-best since moving to Triple-A.

With the Mariners recently signing Josh Naylor as a first baseman, Locklear’s chances of a call-up may diminish. However, his rising profile makes him an attractive trade candidate. Locklear could potentially be packaged in deals to help strengthen the team in other areas, such as acquiring a third baseman or enhancing the bullpen.

The next few days leading up to the trade deadline will be crucial for both Locklear and the Mariners. His significant performance in the minors opens opportunities that may not only benefit him but also contribute to the team’s overall success in the future.
