Two Jiokapeci Canoes Spark 1-2 Finish Mystery in Suva Kabara Race

On July 10, 1964, The Fiji Times reported on the exciting Kabara canoe race held in Suva, where the canoe named Jiokapeci remarkably clinched both first and second places. The unusual occurrence arose from the fact that two of the four canoes from Kabara carried the same name, leading to a bit of confusion among spectators.

Hundreds gathered along the wharves and waterfront to observe the event, which commenced and concluded at the central reclamation jetty. Despite the anticipation, the race did not meet expectations, as it quickly developed into two separate contests within the initial stretch. The two smaller canoes, Railala and Sanita, struggled against the weak wind, necessitating their crews to work diligently on their sails to catch whatever breeze they could find.

As the canoes approached the buoy for the turn, Sanita was significantly behind in third place, with Railala falling further back. Facing challenges on the homeward leg, Sanita’s size and weight hindered its ability to navigate the wind effectively. Ultimately, Jone Mate and Apaitia Seru maneuvered their Jiokapeci to victory, edging out their competitors by a narrow margin. Jone found personal satisfaction in his win, having previously participated in a fifth canoe that sank in heavy seas.

Railala secured third place comfortably ahead of Sanita, as the day also marked vibrant celebrations focused on youth at Albert Park. Younger members of the Methodist Church showcased their athletic talents in various sports, including rugby, women’s and men’s hockey, and athletics, all under perfect weather conditions. Other activities included women’s basketball at the Botanical Gardens and table tennis at the YMCA rooms.

The celebrations kicked off with a grand march of youth at Albert Park, accompanied by a traditional meke of welcome. By 10:45 AM, the Scripture Union display was officially opened, and one hour later, the sports events began, running throughout the day. The evening program included a band concert followed by performances by the Youth Combined Choir and a choir competition, rounding off a spirited day filled with community engagement and youthful celebration.

The ongoing tradition of such events not only highlights Fijian culture but also fortifies community ties and showcases the talents and enthusiasm of the youth, underscoring hope for the future.
