The Fiji Police Force is currently engaged in an investigation linked to the ongoing Commission of Inquiry into former Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has revealed that not all investigative files have been handed over to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for legal evaluation, with only two files still under active investigation. He expressed optimism that these files will soon be forwarded to the ODPP, which will outline the next steps.
The inquiry, directed by Justice David Ashton-Lewis, stemmed from hearings regarding Malimali’s appointment. Following these hearings, the findings were submitted to both the police and FICAC for further review. The ODPP previously acknowledged that the initial investigation was deemed incomplete, leading to the referral of the case to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a more extensive assessment.
In a related court appearance, Barbara Malimali is contesting her dismissal from FICAC, claiming that the Prime Minister did not have the constitutional authority to counsel the President on the termination of her position.
The involvement of the ODPP and CID in this process underscores a dedication to uphold due process. This thorough judicial approach demonstrates a commitment to transparency and integrity within Fiji’s anti-corruption efforts, fostering a hopeful outlook as the investigation unfolds. The continued scrutiny of these matters suggests a reinforcement of accountability and the rule of law in the nation’s governance.
