Two tragic drowning incidents occurred yesterday, highlighting the dangers posed by inclement weather affecting various parts of the country.
In Lautoka, an eight-year-old boy named Ernest Pickering was found floating in the Kaleli River around 10 AM. It is believed that he had gone to collect bamboo with his older brother near their home. When his grandfather called for the children later in the morning and did not receive a response, concerns grew. Unfortunately, despite a search effort, authorities ultimately informed the family that Ernest’s body had been recovered from the river. The community is heartbroken, as he was the youngest of five siblings and a beloved member of his family.
In a separate incident, a man in his 60s who went fishing off the coast of Tubou in Lakeba was discovered lifeless in the sea.
Local police have announced that investigations into both drownings are ongoing, and post-mortem examinations will be conducted to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these tragic events.
As the community grieves these profound losses, the incidents serve as a poignant reminder for families to prioritize safety and remain vigilant, particularly during unpredictable weather conditions. It is a time for neighbors to come together and support each other as they navigate through this sorrowful period.
