Apple is introducing a new feature in the beta version of tvOS 26.4 aimed at resolving sound issues encountered by some Sonos users. This new functionality, dubbed “Continuous Audio Connection,” addresses long-standing problems related to audio output when using Sonos speakers in conjunction with AV receivers.
Reports indicate that the Continuous Audio Connection maintains a Dolby MAT connection, ensuring that audio playback remains uninterrupted as audio formats change. This is particularly beneficial for users who have been experiencing unexpected crackling sounds and lower volume levels, especially while watching 5.1 surround sound content. In cases where the feature is active, legacy receivers may show a Dolby Atmos indicator, although Apple assures users that the source audio remains unchanged.
Feedback from the Sonos community has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where numerous users have reported immediate improvements after enabling this feature. One user noted, “I can confirm that this function fixed my issues with 5.1 multichannel PCM content being way quieter than Atmos content.” Another contributed, “My 5.1 content sounds just as great as Atmos now,” highlighting the effectiveness of the update.
However, not all reactions have been favorable, as some users have reported new challenges when streaming standard stereo audio after enabling the setting. This has spurred discussions about the potential trade-offs for users who frequently switch between audio formats.
As tvOS 26.4 remains in its beta testing phase, it is expected that Apple will continue to refine the Continuous Audio Connection feature before its official launch. The anticipation surrounding this update symbolizes Apple’s commitment to enhancing user experience, particularly for those utilizing a combination of Sonos speakers and Apple TV. Hope remains high that future updates will not only resolve any remaining issues but also continue to improve audio quality for all users.
