Tuvalu’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty while seeking support for climate-resilient infrastructure was unequivocally stated by Minister for Public Works, Infrastructure, Development and Water, Ampelosa Tehulu. Addressing reporters after the 2nd Pacific Disaster Risk Management Ministers Meeting in Palau, Tehulu emphasized that his country would not compromise its autonomy despite the pressing need for climate action.
Tehulu’s remarks came in the context of broader regional cooperation, specifically in support of the Koror Declaration adopted by Pacific leaders. However, he articulated a cautious approach towards engaging with development partners, highlighting the urgency of climate change that makes time a critical factor for Tuvalu. “Instead of complaining too much, I think we just have to do our own work like reclaiming lands; we do not have to wait,” he remarked, illustrating the proactive stance of the Tuvaluan government.
The Minister also expressed gratitude towards Pacific neighbors for recognizing the urgency of Tuvalu’s situation, where efforts for land reclamation are ongoing amidst the troubling reality of losing significant portions of its lagoon environment. He acknowledged the challenging task of convincing Tuvaluans about the existential threats posed by climate change, alongside expressing skepticism towards the efficacy of global climate diplomacy like the United Nations Conference of the Parties, which he deemed costly and lacking in substantial outcomes for nations like Tuvalu that are heavily affected by climate change.
In reiterating Tuvalu’s stance on international support, Tehulu urged for genuine commitment from Pacific leaders to ensure that the assistance provided doesn’t go unnoticed and calls for real accountability if partnerships are not upheld.
