Tuvalu Seeks Senior Fisheries Advisers to Strengthen Coastal and Offshore Management

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is collaborating with the Tuvalu Fisheries Authority (TFA) to recruit two qualified advisers for the Tuvalu Fisheries Support Programme (TFSP3). These roles are integral to enhancing fisheries management and building local capacity within Tuvalu’s fisheries sector.

The first role is for a Tuvalu Fisheries Adviser focusing on offshore fisheries. This full-time position, which comes with a three-year contract that may extend through 2030, is based in Funafuti and emphasizes management, policy, compliance, and adherence to regional obligations related to offshore fisheries. Applicants should have over ten years of experience in the fisheries sector, highlighting senior management and advisory expertise with a prefered background in the Pacific region. The application deadline is set for 5:00pm (NZ Time) on November 10, 2025.

The second role is for a part-time Tuvalu Inshore Fisheries Adviser, also under a three-year contract with the possibility of extension. While ideally based in Funafuti, the position offers flexibility for remote work supported by extended in-country visits. This adviser will focus on coastal fisheries management, community engagement, and mentoring local Community Fisheries Officers, requiring a similar ten years of experience in coastal fisheries management, preferably in developing countries and particularly in the Pacific and Tuvalu contexts. The application deadline for this position is November 17, 2025.

Both roles present exciting opportunities to significantly influence sustainable fisheries management in Tuvalu, emphasizing community livelihoods and food security. This aligns with past challenges faced by local fishermen, as many have reported declining yields amid climate changes affecting fish populations and migration patterns—a crucial issue in Tuvalu, where fisheries are vital for sustenance and economic stability.

The Tuvalu government’s recent efforts to strengthen fisheries management reflect a proactive approach in tackling both environmental challenges and economic needs, echoing concerns voiced by local fishermen about the dwindling availability of resources. These positions are timely as Tuvalu seeks to enhance its fisheries sector’s resilience in an era marked by rising sea levels and climate change.

Overall, this recruitment drive reinforces the commitment of Tuvalu and its partners to sustainable development, supporting both the environment and the communities that depend on it.
