Tuvalu’s Prime Minister Feleti Teo has arrived in Taiwan this week for an official visit, where he met with President William Lai to discuss topics of mutual interest. Accompanied by an 11-member delegation, Teo was welcomed at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung.
Tuvalu is one of the few Pacific nations that continues to recognize Taiwan diplomatically, standing firm against China’s efforts to persuade countries to sever ties through its One China policy. The delegation includes notable leaders from the Tuvaluan islands of Niutao, Tuitonga Pelosa, and Funafuti, as mentioned by Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry.
During his six-day visit, Prime Minister Teo is expected to hold discussions with President Lai and Foreign Minister Lin about cooperative projects that aim to strengthen diplomatic relations and foster friendship between their nations. This visit marks Teo’s first official state trip to Taiwan since he took office in February of last year, although he had previously visited twice in 2022—once for President Lai’s inauguration in May and again for the Double Ten National Day celebrations in October.
This enduring diplomatic relationship highlights Tuvalu’s dedication to maintaining its connections with Taiwan amid increasing regional pressures, emphasizing the significance of small island nations in the larger geopolitical context.
