Tush Push Nears Ban as NFL Resistance Grows, Kelce Says

Jason Kelce, a former All-Pro center for the Philadelphia Eagles, has expressed his belief that the controversial “tush push” play in football is nearing its end. Speaking during a radio appearance in Philadelphia, Kelce shared his insights into the league’s growing resistance to the play, which gained notoriety under his influence. Despite its effectiveness, particularly for the Eagles, Kelce indicated that there is considerable momentum within the NFL to eliminate the play, a sentiment that he understands but does not personally share.

The “tush push” play faced potential prohibition in the last offseason when the Green Bay Packers lobbied for banning it. Although the proposal fell short of the necessary votes to pass, the play remains under scrutiny. Criticism intensified during a highly-watched Super Bowl rematch between the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, where the play’s execution drew objections from Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who alleged premature movements by the offensive players on the Eagles.

Kelce acknowledges the controversy but defends the play, arguing that its supposed competitive advantage is overblown. He points out that while the Eagles have effectively utilized the play, other teams have not demonstrated similar success, disputing claims of its universality. He further contends that the defensive tactics to stop the play do not differ significantly from the actions permitted on the offensive side, where players assist their teammates.

Concerns have been raised about the potential increased risk of injury associated with the “tush push,” but Kelce disputes these claims, suggesting that the play reveals less risky than traditional short-yardage strategies. He highlights the controlled nature of the play, contrasting it with situations where offensive linemen face greater injury risks.

Despite his defenses, Kelce recognizes the trajectory pointing toward the play’s elimination, noting that influential voices in the league are advocating for its removal. He maintains optimism, however, that the decision to outlaw it won’t significantly impede the Eagles’ offensive prowess, as their proficiency in quarterback sneaks remains a substantial asset.

Teammate Landon Dickerson echoed Kelce’s sentiments, expressing a pragmatic view on the play’s future: if the league decides to abolish it, so be it. Overall, the players seem prepared to adapt, confident in their ability to continue executing effective strategies regardless of any potential rule changes.
