Turner on the Move: Will Lyon Be the Key to Reviving His Career?

Matt Turner is rumored to be making his way to Olympique Lyonnais from Nottingham Forest in a transfer deal reportedly worth €8 million, as per sources. The American goalkeeper, who will celebrate his 31st birthday on June 24, has held the starting position for the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) for the past few years but has faced challenges in securing consistent playing time at the club level.

After transferring to Nottingham Forest from Arsenal in 2023 in pursuit of more game time, Turner lost his starting position midway through the season. He spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, where he made only four appearances, including three in the FA Cup, contributing to the team’s historic tournament victory. Unfortunately, he did not get the chance to play in any Premier League matches during the 2024-25 season.

A transfer to Lyon could present a vital opportunity for Turner to regain regular playing time, particularly as this year is crucial for his career and his tenure as the USMNT’s starting goalkeeper. Lyon currently boasts Lucas Perri as their first-choice goalkeeper, but with Perri anticipated to leave the club soon, Turner’s arrival may suggest that he could step into the starting role.

The move also has American connections; Lyon is owned by John Textor, who also owns Crystal Palace. This situation could facilitate Turner’s desire for increased playing time while keeping him within the network of clubs managed by Textor. Following this potential transition, Turner would join fellow USMNT midfielder Tanner Tessmann at Lyon, who has been part of the club since last summer.

If finalized, Turner would join a Lyon side that finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season and now aims to qualify for the 2025-26 Europa League. Currently, Turner is focused on aiding the USMNT in their quest for victory in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup before possibly starting a new chapter in France. This move could reinvigorate his career and provide him with the match experience he needs ahead of significant international competitions.
