Turkish Airlines, the national flag carrier of Turkey, has unveiled plans for a significant expansion of its fleet with the addition of 225 Boeing aircraft. This substantial order was outlined in a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange and coincides with diplomatic engagements between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump.
The airline has reached an agreement for the acquisition of 75 Boeing B787-9 and B787-10 aircraft. It plans to place 50 of these as confirmed orders with an option for an additional 25. Deliveries for these advanced, fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft, designed to enhance the airline’s international travel capacity, are scheduled between 2029 and 2034. Turkish Airlines is currently engaged in discussions with Rolls-Royce and GE Aerospace for acquiring engines, spare parts, and securing maintenance services.
Simultaneously, Turkish Airlines has finalized negotiations to procure 150 Boeing 737-8/10 MAX aircraft. This deal includes 100 confirmed purchases and an option for 50 more. The airline plans to proceed with this order pending final negotiations with CFM International regarding engine supplies.
With one of the global aviation industry’s most extensive flight networks, Turkish Airlines’ ambitious fleet expansion signals its commitment to strengthening its international presence and modernizing its fleet with fuel-efficient aircraft.
In diplomatic developments, President Trump indicated a potential shift in U.S. policy regarding military sales to Turkey, hinting that the hold on advanced fighter jet sales might soon be lifted. Relations between the two NATO allies have been complicated in recent years, particularly following Turkey’s removal from the U.S. F-35 fighter jet program in 2019—a decision made after Turkey acquired a Russian-made air defense system.
This move by Turkish Airlines aligns with a broader strategic vision of enhancing its fleet capabilities and supporting Turkey’s aspirations to strengthen commercial ties with international allies.
