A recent United Airlines flight from Lagos, Nigeria, to Washington DC faced a significant incident that resulted in multiple injuries among passengers and crew members. The Boeing 787-800, which took off from Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 11:59 PM on January 23, was forced to make an emergency return shortly after takeoff due to a reported “technical issue and an unexpected aircraft movement.” The plane successfully returned and landed at 3:22 AM on January 24.
On board were 245 passengers, 11 crew members, and three pilots. Fortunately, all individuals were able to disembark safely after the emergency landing. However, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed that four passengers and two crew members suffered serious injuries, while an additional 27 passengers and five crew members experienced minor injuries.
Micheal Achimugu, Nigeria’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), reassured the public through a statement to Radio Nigeria, emphasizing that there had been no fatalities. Those who had minor injuries received first aid and were discharged immediately, while those with serious injuries were stabilized and taken to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja.
