Stony Brook University’s WUSB-FM, the largest non-commercial free-form radio station in Long Island, is holding its annual Radiothon with Giving Tuesday on December 3. The university community is invited to support the station as it faces a budget shortfall that threatens its broadcasting operations.
In service for 47 years, WUSB broadcasts at 90.1 FM and 107.3 FM. The funds raised will be essential, as donations go directly towards operational costs rather than salaries. Contributions of any amount are welcomed, especially as year-end tax-exempt donations can provide a boost to the station’s financial health.
Supporters can easily make their pledges online or by calling the office at (631) 632-6828 or the station at (631) 632-6901. For those who donate, there are incentives available: a hoodie for donations of $75 and a T-shirt for $50.
Listeners tuning into WUSB can enjoy a diverse lineup of content, including interviews, news, commentary, and a wide variety of music genres such as jazz, pop, punk, metal, and reggae. The station also plays a vital role in the community through thousands of public service announcements each year, keeping listeners informed about local events, health information, and emergency services.
WUSB is supported not only by listener donations but also by funding from Stony Brook University, the Undergraduate Student Government, the Graduate Student Organization, local business underwriting, and various grants.
In encouraging support for WUSB, it’s important to recognize the vital role local media plays in maintaining community connections and providing a platform for diverse perspectives and entertainment. The Radiothon’s focus on community involvement offers a hopeful reminder of the impact that grassroots initiatives can have in sustaining local culture and information sharing.
