TULSA, Okla. –
Oklahoma’s Department of Transportation (ODOT) is actively preparing for the second round of winter weather expected to impact the Tulsa metro area this week. With forecasts predicting wintry conditions overnight from Wednesday into Thursday, ODOT has mobilized its resources to ensure road safety.
According to ODOT, crews have been gearing up since Tuesday, ready to tackle the anticipated weather. A winter mix is expected to sweep across eastern Oklahoma Thursday morning, with lighter precipitation in the north and a potentially heavier band of sleet and snow just south of the Tulsa metro area. A Travel Advisory has been issued, signaling potential hazardous road conditions for drivers.
ODOT’s preparation measures include having all crews on standby and treating elevated bridges and surfaces with salt brine throughout the state. Trucks have been loaded with a salt and sand mixture to assist in melting ice once it begins to form on the roads. Additionally, more trucks and materials are on standby should they be needed to address worsening conditions.
The agency boasts a robust inventory and workforce to manage the winter weather. More than 500 multi-use trucks and over 1,800 employees are positioned across the state, complemented by a stockpile of more than 128,000 tons of salt and salt/sand mix.
For drivers in Oklahoma, ODOT is urging vigilance during this winter event. Motorists are advised to drive slowly, maintain alertness, and allow for extra space between vehicles. It is crucial not to crowd or attempt to pass road-clearing equipment while they are working. Drivers should also be cautious of “black ice,” where roads may appear wet but are actually frozen. To stay informed, ODOT encourages drivers to check current road conditions through their website or by using the Drive Oklahoma mobile app, or by calling 844-4OK-HWYS (844-465-4997).
By promoting safe driving practices and ensuring thorough preparations, ODOT aims to mitigate the risks of winter weather as it affects the region, focusing on the safety of all travelers.
