Tucker’s Troubling Kicks: Can the NFL’s Top Kicker Rebound?

Justin Tucker, the renowned kicker for the Baltimore Ravens, continues to face challenges in his performance during the 2024 NFL season. Despite holding the all-time record for field goal percentage, Tucker’s struggles have led to a disappointing start this season. Heading into Week 11’s match against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he boasted the lowest field goal percentage of his impressive 13-year career.

In the first quarter of the game against the Steelers, Tucker missed two field goal attempts—one from 47 yards and another from 50 yards. Remarkably, these two misses alone brought his number of missed field goals this season to a total higher than his entire tally from the 2023 season, in which he missed five kicks. Historically, he has never missed more than seven field goals in any single season.

Tucker, a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time first-team All-Pro, has built a legacy as one of the greatest kickers in NFL history. Up until the Steelers’ game, he had successfully made 410 field goals in his career, ranking 12th in NFL history.

In the tight game against Pittsburgh, the Ravens fell short with an 18-16 loss, in part due to Tucker’s inability to convert on those crucial kicks. His current season stats reflect a trend of difficulty, with a field goal percentage of only 71.4% after making 15 of 21 attempts, marking a significant drop from his career average of 89.7%. However, Tucker has maintained an exceptional extra point performance, successfully converting 37 of 38 attempts, giving him a 97.4% rate that leads the league as of Week 11.

Turning 35 on November 21, Tucker has a four-year, $24 million contract with the Ravens that includes a potential out after this season. This could allow the team to make roster adjustments if they decide a change is necessary.

Despite these struggles, there’s room for optimism. Justin Tucker’s history of success and resilience could give fans hope that he may turn things around as the season progresses. Experience can often lead to improved performance, and many are eager to see if he can return to form and help guide the Ravens toward success.
