Tubi has announced the greenlighting of three new young adult films featuring rising stars Xochitl Gomez, Chase Hudson, and Asher Angel. This initiative is part of Tubi’s ongoing effort to expand its original content offerings, particularly aimed at younger audiences.
Xochitl Gomez will lead the film “Hive,” a socially aware horror-thriller centered on a diligent and anxious teenager confronting a sinister force after losing the child she is babysitting. The project, written and directed by Felipe Vargas, is based on his short film of the same name and delves into themes of reality and trust in a seemingly safe environment. Production will be managed by Blue Ice Pictures, with key figures such as Nick Scully and Adam Friedlander involved.
Chase Hudson stars in “How to Lose a Popularity Contest,” a romantic comedy adapted from the forthcoming Love List screenplay by Kaitlin Reilly and Dorian Keyes. The narrative follows a rebellious student and an overachiever as they join forces in a bid for the student body president position, with potential romance on the horizon. Great Pacific Media oversees production for this lighthearted project.
Asher Angel takes the lead in “Kissing Is the Easy Part,” which adapts a popular webnovel from Wattpad by Christine Duann. In this film, Angel plays an ambitious student who agrees to tutor a free-spirited classmate for a crucial college recommendation letter, only to find that their chemistry complicates matters. The film is produced by Wattpad Webtoon Studios, with Angel also serving as an executive producer.
The announcement was made during Tubi’s upfront presentation, where CEO Anjali Sud emphasized the significance of ad-supported streaming in the current media landscape. She highlighted Tubi’s success in generating over a billion dollars in ad revenue and its commitment to delivering compelling original content that resonates with younger viewers.
These projects underscore Tubi’s strategy to attract and engage a hard-to-reach demographic, reinforcing its position as a leader among ad-supported streaming platforms. Additionally, the involvement of recognizable young actors suggests that Tubi is keen to leverage their popularity to enhance audience connection and viewership.
With these new films, Tubi is not only diversifying its content but also offering opportunities for fresh storytelling that connects with the issues and experiences relevant to today’s youth.
