Starting February 1, 2026, travelers who arrive at the airport without a Real ID or other acceptable forms of identification may incur a $45 fee due to the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) new policy. The TSA is introducing the “Confirm ID” option to assist those who lack the required identification, which includes not only the Real ID but also a passport.
TSA Administrator Steve Lorincz emphasizes the importance of obtaining a Real ID before traveling to avoid these fees and potential delays. To determine whether your ID is compliant, look for a star symbol at the top of the card. Lorincz advises that individuals planning to travel should visit their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as soon as possible to secure a Real ID.
For those who cannot obtain the Real ID in time for an upcoming trip, the TSA recommends visiting the Confirm ID website to initiate the necessary identification process. Upon arriving at the airport, travelers can present their confirming receipt to TSA agents for verification.
Lorincz noted that the TSA’s approach to security includes comprehensive ID verification, aimed at maintaining a safe and secure travel environment. He indicated that while travelers with a Real ID are unlikely to face delays, those without any acceptable ID should prepare for longer wait times at security checkpoints. The process to confirm identification typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, though it can potentially extend to 30 minutes or longer.
The TSA Confirm ID process will remain valid for a travel period of 10 days.
Travelers are encouraged to secure their Real IDs in advance to ensure a smoother experience at the airport and facilitate hassle-free travel.
