This week at the Tryon Theatre, holiday cheer takes center stage with a delightful pairing of films that cater to both adults and families. The lineup features “The Holdovers” (2023) directed by Alexander Payne and the festive classic “Elf” (2003) directed by Jon Favreau. This selection aims to create a vibrant festive atmosphere, appealing to diverse age groups.

“The Holdovers,” rated R for mature content, transports audiences to a 1970s all-boys boarding school in Massachusetts during the Christmas season. The story follows Mr. Hunham, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, a grumpy teacher tasked with supervising the boys whose families are unable or unwilling to take them home for the holidays. While the film employs humor through conflict, it delves deeper into the evolving bond between Hunham and one of the boys, Angus Tully, presenting a poignant narrative that resonates with adult viewers. This rich blend of comedy and emotion aims to captivate audiences seeking a more mature holiday film experience.

On the more lighthearted side, “Elf” follows Buddy, a human raised by elves at the North Pole, who ventures to New York City on a quest to find his biological father. Will Ferrell’s exuberant portrayal of Buddy injects the film with joy and laughter, showcasing his comical navigation of the human world while spreading a warm message of love and family that’s perfect for all ages.

The two films will screen on select evenings and a matinee. “The Holdovers” will be shown on Wednesday, December 17, at 7 p.m., Thursday, December 18, at 2:30 p.m., and Saturday, December 20, at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, “Elf” will delight audiences on Thursday, December 18, at 7 p.m., Friday, December 19, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, December 21, at 2:30 p.m.

Additionally, “It’s A Wonderful Life” will screen on Sunday, December 21, and Monday, December 22, both at 7 p.m., although both showings are already sold out. Tickets for these screenings were generously donated, and guests wishing to attend must have reserved tickets to guarantee entry. There may be a possibility for standby patrons, but this would depend on cancellations and will require patience from those hoping to enter without a reservation.

Overall, the Tryon Theatre promises an enjoyable and festive experience that aims to uplift spirits and foster a sense of community this holiday season.
