Trump’s New Executive Order: National Parks Fees Restructure Raises Questions on Accessibility and Equity

President Trump has enacted an executive order that will raise entry fees for international visitors to national parks, with the intention of enhancing accessibility for American families and improving park infrastructure. This directive aims to ensure that U.S. residents can afford to enjoy the nation’s natural treasures, such as the Grand Canyon and the Great Smoky Mountains.

The increased fees for non-U.S. residents will fund much-needed improvements at federal recreation sites. In the executive order issued on July 3, Trump stressed the importance of preserving these experiences for future generations of American families, indicating that the government will prioritize U.S. residents in regard to access to recreational permits and rules.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum supported these goals via a post on social media. Revenue from the heightened entry fees will be allocated toward upgrading facilities and infrastructure in national parks.

Notably, the executive order also rescinds a 2017 memorandum from former President Obama that promoted diversity and inclusion within national parks. This former initiative aimed to ensure equitable access for all Americans and involved seeking input from diverse communities to protect significant cultural and natural landmarks.

The Biden administration had placed emphasis on diversity within national parks, with former National Park Service Director Chuck Sams highlighting efforts to tell untold stories and ensure representation in the park experiences.

The recent changes by Trump reflect a shift from the inclusivity initiatives that were previously established, focusing instead on optimizing park access for American residents. The National Park Service has been contacted for further comments on this new executive order.

This executive order may spark discussions on how national parks balance financial sustainability with equitable access for all visitors. It is hoped that the increased revenue will indeed lead to enhanced visitor experiences in the parks, benefiting both American and international tourists alike.
