In a renewed push for U.S. territorial interests, President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his previous calls to purchase Greenland from Denmark, which he had originally made during his first term. This latest initiative arrives as he gears up for his upcoming inauguration on January 20, drawing attention to his administration’s foreign policy approach even before officially taking office.
In a recent statement announcing his ambassador to Denmark, Trump emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland for national security, asserting that its ownership is “an absolute necessity” for the United States. The island, the world’s largest, is strategically positioned between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans and is mostly covered by an ice sheet. It is also home to a significant U.S. military installation.
This resurgence in interest comes on the heels of Trump’s remarks regarding other regions, including suggesting that the United States take back control of the Panama Canal due to rising shipping costs. He also floated the idea that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state and referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a ‘governor’.
However, Greenland’s current leadership has firmly rejected Trump’s overtures. Múte Bourup Egede, Greenland’s head of government, reiterated that the territory is not for sale and emphasized a commitment to their ongoing pursuit of independence from Denmark.
The matter of the Panama Canal has also been contentious, especially in light of increased fees due to drought-related operational reductions. Trump has criticized the current situation, claiming the U.S. is being “ripped off,” and has suggested that Panama should return control of the Canal to the United States.
