Donald Trump has called on Netflix to remove Susan Rice, a prominent Democratic foreign policy expert, from its board or risk facing consequences. The former president labeled Rice, who previously served as national security adviser under Barack Obama and as a UN ambassador under Joe Biden, a “political hack” and claimed that she possesses “no talent or skills.”

Trump’s comments, made on his Truth Social platform, come amid a fierce corporate battle for control over Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) between Netflix and Paramount Skydance. Just weeks ago, Trump had suggested he would refrain from intervening in the takeover process, stating that the justice department would oversee the matter. However, his recent remarks signal renewed interest in the unfolding developments. Any acquisition of WBD must receive approval from federal regulators.

In his post, Trump asserted of Rice, “HER POWER IS GONE, AND WILL NEVER BE BACK,” questioning her compensation and qualifications. Rice had previously served on Netflix’s board from 2018 until 2020, departing during the Biden administration, but she rejoined the board in 2023 and is currently a member of the company’s nominating and governance committee.

Recently, Rice voiced concerns on a podcast regarding the repercussions for corporations, law firms, and media organizations that showed loyalty to Trump, predicting they would face accountability should the Democrats regain power. Trump amplified his attack on Rice by sharing a post from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer, who referred to both Rice and Netflix as “anti-American,” alleging that Rice threatened political retribution against those who supported Trump.

As the deadline approaches for Paramount Skydance to present its final offer for WBD, it is clear that the rivalry is intensifying. Paramount is attempting to secure a staggering $108.4 billion takeover, backed by a personal $40 billion guarantee from Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle.

The potential merger between Netflix and WBD has attracted criticism from various lawmakers and entertainment industry figures, who express concern that the combination could lead to a media conglomerate dominating almost half of the streaming market. Netflix has been approached for further comments regarding the situation.

This ongoing battle highlights the intersection of media, politics, and corporate power, showcasing the high stakes involved in the future of streaming entertainment.
