President Trump is set to honor a distinguished 100-year-old Korean War veteran with the Medal of Honor during tonight’s State of the Union address. E. Royce Williams, a retired Navy captain, demonstrated extraordinary bravery as a fighter pilot during a classified mission in 1952, where he shot down four Soviet MiG-15 jets, an achievement that remained undisclosed to the public for many years.

Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) expressed his excitement over Williams receiving this honor, highlighting the importance of the law he and Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) passed, which waived time limits to ensure Captain Williams could be recognized for his courageous actions. Kelly described the intense 35-minute dogfight Williams endured, during which he famously ran out of ammunition and managed to return to his aircraft carrier, despite his plane being severely damaged.

This remarkable engagement occurred in blizzard conditions close to the North Korean border, as Williams targeted enemy positions from his F9F-5 Panther fighter. The mission was of such sensitivity that not only was it kept secret from the public, but even Williams’ wife was unaware of its details, done to prevent any escalation with the Soviet Union.

During the mission, upon arriving at his target, Williams faced an overwhelming assault as the Soviets deployed seven MiG-15 fighters to intercept him. Reflecting on the harrowing encounter, Williams recalled his quick identification of the incoming threats and his subsequent response, describing the chaotic scene of bullets flying above and below him as he fought back.

Just days ago, Trump reached out to Williams personally to inform him of the prestigious accolade. Although the White House has yet to comment on the anticipated honor, the recognition of Captain Williams’ exceptional service is a testament to the heroism displayed during one of the war’s most intense aerial engagements. This award serves not only to acknowledge Williams’ bravery but also to remind future generations of the sacrifices made by those who serve their nation.
