Trump Sparks Controversy with Comments on Kamala Harris

Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris “happened to turn Black” a few years ago, during remarks made at a gathering of Black journalists in Chicago. When asked whether he agreed with Republicans calling Harris a “DEI hire,” Trump questioned her heritage, suggesting she had only recently embraced a Black identity despite her mixed Indian-Jamaican background.

Trump’s comments echo his past attacks on Black political figures, similar to the false “birther” conspiracy theory he promoted about former President Barack Obama. Harris, born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, is the first female, Black, and Asian American vice president. She responded to the comments in Houston, calling them divisive and disrespectful.

Trump, speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists convention, also faced pointed questions from a panel that included ABC News’ Rachel Scott. Scott questioned Trump on his history of making racist claims and comments about Black individuals, to which he responded defensively, criticizing both the question and ABC.

During the interview, Trump touted his record with the Black community, citing economic improvements and his support for historically Black colleges and universities. He also labeled some technical difficulties at the event as disgraceful.

When asked about Republicans calling Harris a “DEI hire,” Trump responded ambiguously. Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, criticized Trump’s remarks as lacking character and a distraction from the election’s stakes. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned Trump’s comments as repulsive and insulting, emphasizing that personal identity is a personal choice.

The Harris campaign noted that Trump frequently attacked Black journalists and reiterated that his divisive tactics disqualify him from unifying the nation. During the NABJ event, Trump also claimed to be the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln, drawing audible groans from attendees.

Trump’s interview also covered topics like pardoning January 6 rioters and choosing a running mate. He indicated that Ohio Sen. JD Vance’s selection as vice president would hold little electoral impact compared to the presidential candidate.
