President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed retired Navy SEAL and businessman Ed Gallrein as a potential candidate for the Republican primary to challenge incumbent Congressman Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District during the 2026 elections. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Massie as a “Third Rate Congressman” and described him as a “Weak and Pathetic RINO” (Republican In Name Only), advocating for his removal from office.

Trump expressed confidence in Gallrein, asserting that he would be a decisive force in revitalizing America, stating he is “a true America First Patriot.” Gallrein, a fifth-generation farmer from Shelby County, has a decorated career in the military spanning over three decades. Although he previously ran for the Kentucky state Senate in the seventh district last year, he did not secure the Republican nomination.

Massie, who is seeking his eighth term in Congress, has often been at odds with Trump, voting against key aspects of Trump’s policies, including tariffs and military actions. His role in pressing for the release of federal government documents related to Jeffrey Epstein has further strained relations with the former president.

As more candidates declare their intentions to run—such as Robert Wells Jr. and Nicole Lee Ethington in the Republican primary, alongside three declared Democratic candidates—Gallrein’s potential entry into the race could shift dynamics significantly. Massie has consistently won his previous elections, often unopposed, and his seat is considered safe for Republicans, as evidenced by his solid support in the 2024 elections against Kamala Harris.

Despite being at the center of this political discourse, Gallrein has yet to officially announce a campaign. However, if he chooses to enter the race, the backing from Trump could give him a notable advantage over other challengers. In response to Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein, Massie has challenged the credibility of his opponent and is rallying his supporters to bolster his campaign efforts for the upcoming election. This potential race promises to add intrigue to the political landscape of Kentucky as the 2026 midterms approach.
